The final results are in and have been calculated by the Bart’s Bash team, and the winner of Bart’s Bash 2015 has been revealed as Alex Schon and Marc Hiles, sailing at Lake Deneys Yacht Club, South Africa.
Clacton Sailing Club, UK, took the rest of the podium places with Pete Boxer and Eilish Dempsey claiming 2nd place and Matthew Burrell and Jack Wayland taking 3rd.

Alex and Marc beat thousands of participants from across 62 countries, who took part in the global sailing event on September 20th 2015.

After hearing of the news, Alex who sailed with Marc in a Nacra F20 commented “This year we had winds of 35knots and with a short, sharp chop this made for a wild ride, with our Nacra 20 at times launching itself right out of the water. We had a fantastic ride and took a somewhat conservative approach. With only Marc out on the wire, we managed to keep our beast upright. I think that the tough conditions prevented more people from attending, but I really believe that this event needs to grow and that the great work that is being done needs to spread throughout the world, in particular throughout Africa.”

For the second time, on 20 September, the world of sailing turned out in a huge show of support for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. Bart’s Bash 2015 saw an incredible combined time of one year, one hundred and fifteen days sailing by sailors across 62 countries, Olympic gold medallist Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson was remembered, and funds raised for the international sailing charity founded in his name.

To date the ASSF have granted over £250,000 to support the delivery of 20 different inspiring sailing projects, which aim to transform the lives of young people through sailing. Each project supports children and young people aged 5-24 with financial, physical and social needs to participate in sailing and develop them as individuals.

An announcement was made last week that Bart’s Bash 2016 will be held over 2 days, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th September 2016. This is a really exciting prospect to further the mass participation quest, as for those who wish to can hold events on both days. More details will be announced in the coming months but for now it’s a date to put in the calendar for 2016.

‘Thank you again to everyone for being part of this special event – none of this can happen without you. Whether you are sailing, supporting or organising, you are what makes Bart’s Bash, a wonderful day for all of us and a fitting tribute to Andrew. We really hope you can all join us for Bart’s Bash 2016’.
